Cash stuffing: what it is and how to do it digitally
Updated June 28, 2026
Cash stuffing is envelope budgeting done with physical cash. On payday you take out your spending money and split it across labeled envelopes, one per category. You spend only what is in each envelope. It is the same method your grandparents used, and it spread on TikTok because watching the envelopes fill up is oddly satisfying and the limit is impossible to ignore.
Why it caught on
A stack of filled envelopes is concrete in a way a banking app is not. You can hold your “Groceries” money, see it shrink, and feel the limit. That feedback is the whole point. The hashtag turned a private habit into a shared one, with people posting their paycheck splits, no-spend streaks, and month-in-review totals.
How to start cash stuffing
- Pick your categories and amounts. Groceries, gas, dining, fun, and a sinking fund or two. Decide how much cash each gets per paycheck.
- Withdraw and split. Take out the total in cash and stuff each envelope with its amount.
- Spend from the envelope. When you buy groceries, pay from the groceries envelope. When it is empty, you are done for the period.
- Save what is left. Roll leftovers into next month or move them to a goal.
The honest downsides of physical cash
Cash is risky to carry, useless for online orders and subscriptions, and a pain to reconcile if you lose a receipt. Many people love the method but not the logistics.
Digital cash stuffing
You can keep the exact mental model without the cash. A digital envelope app gives you the same labeled envelopes and the same hard limits, plus it works for online spending and never gets lost. The trick is logging fast enough that the habit sticks. Two taps per purchase is the bar.
Share your setup
Part of the fun is sharing. Tuckaway can render a clean card of your envelope setup, your month in review, or a no-spend streak, sized for stories, so you can post your progress without handing any app your bank login. Everything is created on your phone.
Put it into practice
Tuckaway is a private envelope budget app. Unlimited envelopes, two-tap logging, and CSV import are free. No bank login.
